AMAZING. I found quite a few worthy renditions of Meadowland, but that one was the most exciting - and historically informative!
This Russian song has many names. Polyushko-Polye, Song of the Plains, Meadowland and Meadowlands, Soviet Cavalry Song and Russian Cavalry Song, Cavalry of the Steppes, Oh Fields, My Fields, and surely more in the Russian tongue.
It is not a folk tune about peasants out harvesting the wheat crop, as I once thought, but was actually written in 1933! The lyrics express the thoughts of a young Russian soldier.
"The music was composed by Lev Knipper, with lyrics by Viktor Gusev in 1933. The song was part of the symphony with chorus... "A Poem about a Komsomol Soldier" (Поэма о бойце-комсомольце) ...The original lyrics are sung from the perspective of a Red Army recruit, who proudly leaves his home to keep watch against his homeland's enemies." There is nothing POLITICAL in my posting this song from Russia; I can appreciate music from all cultures, just as Protestants can take pleasure in the lovely strains of Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria," a hymn to Mary, and I think many Catholics probably appreciate "Amazing Grace" by John Newton.
