Nearer, My God, to Thee
Sheet Music for Piano
This beautiful hymn and its lyrics have been beloved for over a hundred years. It was brought to new prominence, perhaps, when the movie "Titanic" portrayed the orchestra aboard the sinking ship playing "Nearer, My God, to Thee," in their final moments.

The right hand is full of chord fragments, but mostly thirds, which are pretty easy (if kids remember the Bb).
Left hand doesn't move around too much at first, but finally, it has to leave its safe place and hang out with octaves. No fingering there, although I suggest using an arpeggio shape in the left hand, measure 8.
A beginner version, with chord symbols

This song will sound complete if you turn it into a duet, making use of the chord symbols above the melody.
The lyricist
Sarah Flower Adams wrote the words, in the 1800's. The lyrics to this song were written at the request of Sarah's minister, who needed a hymn to accompany his sermon about Jacob's dream about a ladder to heaven, with angels going up and down on it.
Though she was a talented actress and writer, whose poetry was even admired by Robert Browning, it is this hymn that has endured. If you would like to read a long and interesting story about the genesis of Nearer, My God, to Thee, check out this page at LukePowellMinistries.
