Sweet Hour of Prayer
Hymn Music for Piano

Sweet Hour of Prayer is a pretty hymn with an easily-remembered melody.  I loved it when I was a little girl, and it was very old even then!

Look on this page for 3 piano arrangements & 1 guitar sheet:

  • Late elementary/early intermediate solid chords in left hand
  • The same melody, but with broken chords in the left hand
  • A beginner shared-hands melody arrangement, with chord symbols for a duet partner

Near the bottom of the page, you will find the guitar tabs version.

Chord inversions, and finger replacement

Both the arrangement above and the one below have non-root chords (inversions) and a melody that requires some careful fingering, but the two versions sound very different.

The first arrangement has a restful, peaceful sound; the one below is perhaps prettier, with more motion.

Four verses of lyrics

Most of the hymnals in which I've seen Sweet Hour of Prayer only include three verses, omitting the fourth verse "I'll shout while passing through the air, 'Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!'  I like them all so I have included that last one.
