My Experience with Autism and Music

by Rosanne
(The Netherlands)

I have Asperger Syndrome myself. I started playing drums when I was 7. I am almost 16 now. I'm starting to play piano now.

Although I'm not a teacher or something like that. But music helps me to calm down and in places with lots of different sounds it helps me to concentrate. Playing music helped me to improve my motor skills.

Music is very important to me. And to be able to play it is awesome. Children with any form of Autism should be able to have a chance to play music, to be able to go to college and have a good life instead of being bullied and left out because they are a bit different.

People who see that kids with Autism or a handicap etc. can do things like any other person, sometimes just with a little help from someone are the people I am very thankful for.

I myself am going to school now, and I enjoy it. I have very nice teacher who understands me, the same with the kids in my class. I know that for many people with Autism it's hard to blend in and be accepted just like you are.

It costs me 15 years to being accepted as I am without people talking behind my back about me.

I am very thankful for the people who spend their time trying to make things easier for people like me.
Thank you.

Greetings from the Netherlands.

Rosanne.
