If played as a duet, the melody or Primo part must be played UP an octave. This may seem too obvious to mention to most of you piano teachers, but some people take things very literally...

Now here is a secondo part, suitable for students who can play chords and chord inversions:

The Coventry Carol describes the "slaughter of the innocents" in the time of Jesus. This story is told in the gospel of Matthew (in the New Testament portion of the Bible), and was foretold in the Old Testament, hundreds of years before:

Matthew 2:16 - 18:

"Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all the region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

"A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more."

Though beautiful, this is a sobering piece of music, which tells a little-known part of Jesus's early history.

Here are soprano Valeria Mignaco and lutist Alfonso Marin with a beautiful rendition of this Christmas song:
