My Country Tis of Thee, also called "America", is one of our most stirring patriotic songs. This page has an easy but nicely harmonized version of America for late elementary/early intermediate piano students. In addition, I have included a downloadable pdf of the "My Country 'Tis of Thee" lyrics.
When I was a girl, this was one of the songs we sang at school. I seem to remember singing lots of patriotic songs as a schoolgirl; I wonder if kids still do that.
From AmericaTheBeautiful.com, nice photos & videos, and children's voices singing "My Country 'Tis of Thee":
Here is My Country Tis of Thee for second or third year piano students. I had fingering in my own copy, but have had a change of mind about including it for you, since there are different ways the fingering can go. Think of this, instead, as an opportunity to discuss good fingering with your student, and try different approaches to the notes. I would use some finger replacement as well as crossing over and tucking under; see what you and your student prefer!
Notice the two broken chords in the second half of My Country 'Tis of Thee. The F chord is easy, but the C inversion will be easier to understand and play if your student has already been exposed to the cadences and chord inversions found in the page 12 Major Scales and Chords for Piano.
Here is a performance of Josh Groban and Heather Headley singing live at Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. -- a very polished production:
For group or classroom use, you may find this printable PDF of America's lyrics handy to download:
Last of all, here's an easy-listening, "country boy"-sounding version of "America":
Do you have a funny story about this music, or does it remind you of something you'd like to share with other readers? Do you have a question? We'd love to hear it!
Carrie,Voice and Piano Teacher:
This site is FABULOUS. For all the reasons you explain on the site itself--this is exactly what piano teachers need! (I still need to go look at the vocal music). Wow. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I am a first-time piano teacher and have been combing the internet for resources. Your wonderful site has been an amazing resource for both my students and myself. Thank you so much for the printable scales, chords, and ideas! We are so grateful!
Hi! Your website is just perfect for me, a beginning piano teacher, and just now responding to a request for guitar lessons...
I think this site is wonderful! Well done. I am a 14 yr old 'ocarinist' and this site has been ever so useful in helping me find some simple tunes to play on my ocarina. I am also planning to learn to the piano soon and already play the clarinet. As I said, this site has been incredibly useful and my friend and I are going to try our Music badge for guides so finding the music for 'Taps' was essential. Thank you for making such an amazing site!

Thank you so much for all the information and materials! Your site is very thorough and well organized! I am a piano teacher in New Orleans, LA and in the process of putting together my own curriculum and recordings. You have inspired me to make my materials available to all online!
